Why We Like The Thule Approach Roof Top Tent

We're sitting on top of the world when we're camping on top of our vehicle in the new Thule Approach Roof Top Tent. Made for ease of use, the tent installs on our vehicle's roof in just minutes—half the time of traditional rooftop tents—thanks to intuitive mounting brackets that can be locked to our roof rack for added security. Once installed, it only takes a couple of minutes to drop the ladder and open up our tent for a weekend of roof-top camping. The tent itself is spacious with an outward-angled entrance and panoramic skylights and windows made to maximize ventilation and our star-gazing time. The built-in mattress spoils us with cushioned sitting and sleeping as we enjoy sunrises and sunsets or sleep in after a hard day of hiking, climbing, or paddling. Mosquito screens keep out the bloodsuckers and other pests while we can roll out the removable rain cover in a hurry if it starts to rain.

The Approach Roof Top Tent is compatible with the Thule Xsporter Pro rack and fits the Thule TracRac-Truck and Thule Track-Rac-Van with Thule's Xadapt 14 Adapter Kits.

More than enough room for 2 adults

Preliminary impressions while still traveling with it for the first time: perfect balance of internal volume, ease of use, comfort, and protection. I had been eyeing hardshells but didn't want to sacrifice the space (or the extra $$$). I'm very pleased with the Approach M, which is more than comfortable for 2 adults. The length allows us to use the foot of the tent as something of an indoor vestibule (climbing the ladder in bare feet isn't comfortable at all). The base tent is reasonably water resistant but I've already learned the hard way that the fly is essential if there's a chance of real rain. With the fly up, we stayed dry in a nightlong torrential downpour. Not so lucky when we but our faith in a dryer forecast for the next night. The mattress is very comfortable. Recommendations for improvement are limited to accessories. The annex looks great and we would have purchased if it was in stock--but its adjustable heights don't ideally accommodate our configuration: on crossbars across pickup bed rails. Even at its shortest "setting," the annex will have nearly a foot of fabric pooled on the ground. We made a makeship mini-annex by attaching vendor tent walls to the extended floor, which doesn't encompass the ladder but still provided a useful private chamber under it. Thule might consider developing an accessory that mimics this set-up at a lower price point than the annex.

The king of RTT's

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

If you are in the market for a roof top tent, look no further than the Thule Approach. This tent has the most well thought out design I've seen and setup takes less than 3 minutes! The mattress is insanely comfortable and the huge windows make stargazing a breeze. Thule knocked it out of the park with this one!

Well worth it.

We have taken the Approach L on 3 camping trips now. 2 overland and 1 state campground. It's better than expected. I've never slept better camping, works fantastic, and is high quality. I was worried about the cost of a rooftop tent but we are doing more than ever now and love it.
