Why We Like The Classic Thermal Merino 3/4 Baselayer Bottom

Staying cozy on wintry mountaintops comes down to layering correctly. We start with Smartwool's Classic Thermal Merino 3/4 Baselayer. This cropped bottom keeps extra fabric out of our ski boots while its woolly build locks in heat and staves off stink.

Just OK

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These baselayers are pretty short and ride up - so when I sit on the lift, they come up over my knees. I’m 5’5”, 135 and have the small. They also stretch out, so knees and butt are baggy by the end of the day. They seem to fit fine when I first put them on, but the cold knees and sag after a day of skiing annoy me enough to keep these around only as a backup option when my Icebreakers are dirty.

This is a great bottom layer under my ski pants for downhill skiing. I also love them for chilly days (20 degrees and colder) backcountry touring and x-c skiing. They are breathable and exactly the warm base layer I needed! I love the wide waist band and gusseted crotch. They are not high waisted but not low riders either. I am 5?5? and 125lbs with a small frame and size small fits perfectly.

Not like the 2018 smartwool merino pants

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I own an older pair of these exact same Smartwool 250 3/4 length bottoms and they are amazing. I bought them in 2018 and am still wearing them all the time. I have tried a handful of other brands with similar offers but nothing comes close. Sadly, Smartwool has changed these a lot since then. Firstly, the sizing is very different. I own these in a small, however the small I ordered this year was much too tight. There was not as much stretch in these. (I would still say they are true to size, as I am often a medium, but if you've owned smartwool items before don't base your sizing on that). Also, the waist band on the older pair has a perfect width, and stretch while never falling down. These didn't seem to have the same quality waist band and the seams underneath the waist band dug into me. Not comfortable or flattering. Super bummed!
