MTN Explore Boot delivers lightweight touring power with Custom Shell comfort and 63° mobility

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"The MTN Explore is my pick for longer tours where you still want reliable downhill performance. The 63° range of motion makes skinning feel smooth and natural, and the Custom Shell HD fit process really dials in the shape. It’s super light for how well it skis—great balance of weight and control."

Long days in the backcountry demand a boot that moves efficiently on the skintrack and holds its own on the descent—and the Salomon MTN Explore Alpine Touring Boot does both with quiet confidence. With a medium-stiff 90 flex and a lightweight construction just under 1300 grams, it finds that ideal middle ground between fast-and-light missions and all-around touring performance.

Salomon’s Custom Shell HD allows a personalized fit in minutes, expanding the 98mm last up to 104mm for dialed comfort without compromising precision. The 63° range of motion feels natural when climbing, and the Surelock walk mode is simple, secure, and fast during transitions. With integrated tech inserts, a carbon spine for powerful ski performance, and a lightweight liner built for long days, the MTN Explore is your go-to boot for everything from hut trips to steep descents deep in the alpine.

Better than its big brother the S/Lab

If it fits your foot well (don't try and force a boot because you like it on paper) this is an outstanding ski touring option, which is a joy to climb in and plenty burley for a sporty descent. When comparing it to the MTN S/Lab it is superior in a couple of ways. First, it is lighter, every gram you save gives you more energy to go longer and harder. Second, and more importantly, it has significantly greater range of motion (63° vs 47°) which is a huge help in both having long efficient strides when the skin track is flat and maintaining heel pressure when the skin track gets steep. For the vast majority of people, these benefits far outweigh the loss in stiffness, particularly since in the backcountry there isn't the crud and moguls of the resort and without ski patrol to bail you out it pays to be a little less hard charging. Only problem I have had with this boot is the straps are of a too flimsy construction, and they tore after a season. Luckily it is an easy replacement.
