Strider Pro 5in Short keeps pace on long trail runs with bounce-free storage and comfort

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"The Strider Pro 5in is my all-time favorite trail running short. It breathes well, dries fast, and the storage setup is unbeatable. I’ve done everything from local loops to mountain ultras in these and never once thought about changing them."

When we're gearing up for long miles on rugged terrain, the Patagonia Strider Pro 5in Short delivers lightweight performance and smart storage that lets us stay focused on the trail. Designed with distance in mind, these shorts move effortlessly with our stride, wick away sweat, and keep essentials close at hand.

A soft, quick-drying liner provides breathable support, while the low-bulk waistband stays in place even during fast descents and steep climbs. We love the five-pocket design—four stretch drop-in pockets and one zippered rear pocket—that holds gels, keys, or a packable wind layer without bouncing. Whether we’re racing or logging solo miles in the backcountry, the Strider Pro helps us go the distance.

I want to love these shorts...

I want to love these shorts, but I find the durability of the fabric and seams in the inner thigh to be an issue. Admittedly, I have pretty big thighs and they rub together when I run, which is what I primarily use these shorts for. I have purchased two pairs of these shorts and have had each pair for about 1.5 years. I've gotten a lot of miles in them, and generally love the fit, comfort, and features of the short (the waist pockets are a good size to fit gels, a car key, tube of chapstick, etc.; and the rear zipper pocket works well for similar items (I find it is too small to fit my phone)). Now, the inner thigh durability issue. On both pairs of shorts I have, holes have developed along the seam in the inner thigh, and because of the thinness and stretch of the fabric, these small holes become larger and larger. It isn't a huge deal, but also because of the construction of the seams and the location the tear appears, the only ways to repair would be to patch them (which would probably cause chafing issues), or to try and sew them, which effectively makes the thigh opening narrower because you have to overlap the fabric in order to close the holes. Am I satisfied with the product? Yes, and have gotten good use out of them. Would I purchase them again? Only if they were on sale, because I would hope an $85 pair of running/hiking shorts would last at least a couple of years with regular use.

Best running shorts

These shorts are perfect for long and short runs alike. The pockets can hold a phone on the side of your hip with plenty of extra space to carry a few gels and keys. I’ve used them for a few 30+ mile trail runs and they keep me cool and comfortable the whole time.

The BEST

Merely the best. I have 2 pair and it's all I wear in the AZ summer 24/7. Sleep in them also and sometimes wear them in the shower and let them dry on my body. The material is quite strong but I usually sit on my climbing gloves if sitting in the dirt or rocks.

Love these shorts, I own a couple pairs. They're great for any distance but they're my go to for ultras and fastpacking because of the great pockets.
