Freewheel Ride Short offers bike-specific comfort with trail-tough durability

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"These are my favorite trail shorts when I want breathable performance that’s still super tough. The higher waistband stays in place while climbing, and the DuraPrint overlay really holds up to scrapes and crashes."

We’ve put in long miles and fast laps in the Outdoor Research Freewheel Ride Short, and it’s the kind of kit that lets us forget about gear and focus on the ride. Designed with input from mountain bikers and trail riders, these shorts feature a bike-specific fit that moves with us through techy switchbacks, uphill grinds, and rowdy descents. The contoured waist with extra rear coverage stays secure in the saddle, while the articulated knees and gusseted crotch mean we never feel restricted.

Engineered for demanding use, the 4-way stretch fabric is abrasion-resistant and finished with DuraPrint® overlays at high-wear areas for added longevity. Subtle laser perforations boost airflow, and secure zip pockets keep our essentials close without bulk. From park laps to backcountry trail epics, these shorts are built to handle it all—layered over a liner or chamois, they’re ready for whatever terrain we throw at them.

My new favorite biking shorts

First off, in full transparency, Outdoor Research gave me this free product to try in exchange for my honest review. I've tested these shorts now on a few red rock desert rides in Southern Utah and I can confidently say that I have found my new favorite mountain bike shorts! I am a 16/18 and typically wear a 2X in OR shorts (my non-MTB favorites are the Ferrosi and the Zendo). Prior to trying these shorts, I wore the Shredly Limitless Stretch Waistband High-Rise Shorts in size 18 when mountain biking. I carry my weight in my lower belly/hips and the Freewheel Ride Short in 2X fit comfortably even with liners. While the Freewheel Ride Short does have a zip and a slide-lock snap, the waistband also has elastic and this kept the shorts comfortable and allowed a full range of motion as I was riding. I've also had issues with other snap-closure shorts popping open while riding and the slide-lock snap on the Freewheel Ride holds securely in place. The fabric on these shorts is durable while remaining lightweight. The trails we rode were narrow at times, with juniper and other shrubs and bushes right along the trail. I had no concerns about my shorts snagging or ripping. Overall, I highly recommend these to anyone looking for a durable, lightweight and breathable short.
