Freewheel Leather Palm Bike Glove offers durable grip and abrasion resistance for rugged rides

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"I’ve been using the Freewheel Leather Palm Glove on aggressive trail rides and it’s a solid performer. The leather palm gives great bar feel and grip, even on rocky descents, and the reinforced padding adds control without bulk. Touchscreen function is a nice bonus for route checks mid-ride."

When the trail gets rowdy and control is non-negotiable, we trust the Outdoor Research Freewheel Leather Palm Bike Glove to keep us connected. Designed with a rugged goat leather palm and crash-resistant padding, it delivers confidence-inspiring grip and impact protection on technical terrain, while staying breathable and flexible for high-mileage days.

A touchscreen-compatible thumb and index finger let us navigate GPS or snap trail shots without taking the gloves off. Reinforced sidewalls and stretch mesh construction add durability and comfort, while the neoprene cuff keeps the fit secure. Whether we’re weaving through root-laced switchbacks or hammering gravel miles, these gloves are ready to hold on tight.

These fall apart with normal wear

The cuff separated from the body on the first day. I sewed it back on for the first glove, the other glove cuff separated about a week later. I held out on these for a few months but after the first glove started separating in another area I had to toss them. I got these because OR is awesome at gloves. Not these gloves I guess.

Fingers Way Too Long

Just these in the mail so no issues with durability yet but the pointer finger is ridiculously long I feel like I have fake nails on or clown shoes for my hands, gloves feel nice otherwise but idk whose hands they modeled them off of

Good quality gloves but finger sizing is off.

I've worn these gloves for almost a year now in many different conditions including very rainy days on the west coast and I'm generally happy with them. I've noticed some discoloration on the leather palms but otherwise these gloves have been holding up well. My only complaint is the sizing of the fingers; I'm normally a medium for gloves but they were too small and then when I sized up to a large they felt ok except for the middle and index finger being too long which is kind of odd. I'm constantly pulling the wrist strap down and tightening up the straps so that they are tighter around my fingers. Not a show stopper for me but I could see this being annoying for others. I had the same issue with the other freewheel gloves as well and I'd like to try the new style for this year but I'm concerned the finger sizing will be the same for those in a large as well. Hopefully OR get's their MTB glove sizing figured out for the next season. I would still recommend these as they seem to be built well and I've worn them for my bike commute to work almost everyday.

Leather Palms Bleed

The glove fits very well. Keeps my hands comfortable during long rides. Only problem is that the leather palms tend to bleed when sweating. Thought the situation would clear up after a few rides. It did not. Wore them most of the summer and the palms still bleed.

Working great for me

Great grip, comfortable, sensitive feel, touchscreen compatible. Had an issue with the cuff seam failing on one pair but OR warrantied that without issue. My one warning is that, at least with the the beige gloves, they can stain your hands from the leather dye when the get really wet. Nothing soap can't deal with but maybe would bother some people. Seems only to happen if you ride in the rain, not just from hand sweat.

They fit like a glove

I ordered the gloves based on the size chart and they fit perfectly. They are snug, but stretch enough to be very comfortable, no seam rub or bagginess. I have used them on about a dozen rides and have rubbed them against tight trees with no damage. The last week has been hot and I have not had any sweaty hands. I purchased these gloves.

No Good

I am on a 700 km gravel bike packing trip and after 3 days of riding the cuff seam on both gloves has ripped out. Extremely disappointing considering these were the only gloves I brought. Also can't use my navigation device without taking the gloves off. Normally have found OR products to be of good quality and value. Yikes!

I bought these gloves for dirt biking

Even thought I bought these gloves for dirt biking, I will use them for mountain biking this summer once the snow melts. I like having the leather palm for more protection when I crash. The gloves were a little tight at first in-between my fingers, but by the end of the day I didn't notice any restriction - plus leather is great because it eventually forms to your hands. I like how thin they are, these gloves are the perfect weight with the right amount of cushion on the palm - no blisters after 40 miles and no issues with overheating. My only complaint is the touchscreen could be improved, I was able to take pictures but had to take them off to look at the map on my phone. Excited OR created gear for biking, the Freewheel shorts are also perfection. Would love to see another option in a lighter color for riding in the summer! For reference - I bought the Pro Khaki colorway, size Small (usually a size Medium in women's gloves).

Love these gloves - instant classics.

Instant classic. I'm a bit of a glove snob and have tried countless brands and styles in search of what works for me. These gloves have nailed what I have been searching for. I strongly prefer adjustable cuffs and this thin neoprene like material and design is perfect and doesn't interfere with the buttons on my smart watch. The first pair I've found that can do this. The absorbent terry cloth thumb wipe is great for wiping things on your face that just need wiping. The beat part though is the goatskin palms with the strategically placed padding. Just enough padding and a really nice grippy, tactile feel on the bars. I dare say this part makes the gloves feel luxurious and buttery soft while being perfectly grippy. Just primo. I really hope to see this glove offered in many more colors.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been using these gloves on probably a dozen different rides ranging from 2-6 hours per ride. I've used them for gravel rides and even under the bar mitts on my fat bike for some mild winter day rides in the snow. Just last week we finally had a nice weather spring day where I could actually ride my Mountain Bike outside! These new gloves from Outdoor Research are very comfy, they seem to breathe well and offer great grip on the bars. I've worn them in temps between 55-70 and they were perfect. I might want something a little lighter for full gas summer time XC riding, but these are just the perfect weight for this spring weather. I'm impressed with how comfortable they are! Having owned countless pairs of gloves from various brands, you just know "that feeling" when they feel right, and these hit the spot for me. I was happy to see them advertised as touch screen compatible, to me this is a non negotiable feature since I have a touchscreen GPS and the obvious smart phone, both of which I may need to access quickly at anytime mid ride. In my experience I found the touchscreen performance to be quite poor, and disappointing to the fact I second guessed using the gloves on a few rides, but they are super comfortable so they have kept me hooked. I was able to use my GPS reasonably well, but my phone however I couldn't even operate well enough to enter my passcode or answer and incoming call, basically useless until I pulled the glove off. Pulling them off in a hurry is actually slightly frustrating since the Velcro closure seems to stick a little too well and was hard to peel loose using my other gloves hand. In these are probably my favorite lightweight riding Glover, but in basic user friendly features like touchscreen use and easy on and off they seem to fall slightly short of other gloves I've favored in the past. Tomorrow morning we're going to ride dirt jump bikes at an amazing indoor bike park, I packed two pairs of gloves, and these are one of the two I chose for this trip. Outdoor Research gave me this free product to try.
