I never go canoe camping without it.
I am guessing I got my first one 20 years ago. Both are still as good as new. Used mainly for food (bear proof) and sometimes equipment depending on the size of the group. I do not know if you can still get it but I have shoulder straps that clip to either box as needed. Very comfortable and convenient. When I was younger I sometimes would haul box and canoe over portages at the same time. So much for the box being too big to portage. you can sit on them, use them as a table, and for practical purposes they are water proof. I was hesitant to pay the price for my first one but it turned out to be one of the best camping investments I ever made.

NRS Box
I have been using this box as a river triping box for 15 years or more. It originally was called a York Box. It is bear proof makes a good seat and fits well in a canoe. It is not water proof if upside down in the water. The gasket is not good and the straps altho better that the original do not hold a compression on the gasket.
