Important Upgrades, Still 4 Stars

I own the previous version of this pack. I have used it as a summit pack, grocery bag, beach bag, etc. It rides around under the back seat of my truck and remains at the ready. I really like it but my big complaints (and why I gave it 4 stars) were that there was only one water bottle pocket, it was small and hard to use, and (less importantly) the stuff pocket zipper could be longer to make it easier to pack the bag into its pocket. MR solved both these problems. The new bottle pockets are a HUGE upgrade for my use; they accommodate bottles of varying sizes (I've used up to a 50 oz Camelbak Chute), and the drawcords allow for a fairly secure hold while making it easy enough to remove bottles. Being able to load both sides of the bag with bottles (or something else, like my bottle/portable speaker setup recently for a bicycle ride with my son) allows it to be more balanced, which is important on a bag this light. I'd like to see a couple drain holes at the bottom of them though (and maybe one in the main compartment), in case you were to get caught in the rain without a cover. The pockets are secure enough for hiking or (as mentioned) riding a bike. The longer zipper on the stuff pouch means I can tuck the bag in neatly like it was when it arrived new, rather than cramming it in there in a wad, but honestly that isn't a big deal and I often just leave the bag out of its pouch. But, this pack doesn't get 5 stars again because there are several small changes MR made that I don't care for. The new bag has a cleaner aesthetic, but I liked the daisy chains and cinch straps of the other version because they were useful to me. I liked that the mesh portion of the old stuff pouch faced outward, rather than inward, because I could stash wet items in there and they'd get some airflow from outside the bag, and they'd be better separated from contents inside the bag. Speaking of airflow, MR touts the new straps as being breathable, but I doubt they are as breathable as the older version, which had mesh on both front and back of the straps. I preferred the zipper at the top of the bag rather than the front because it was easier to use while holding the bag. And I really miss the small top/front zip pocket of the old version, which I suspect was eliminated because of the new zipper access of this new version. Most of these changes seem to have been made for a streamlined aesthetic at the cost of function. If they'd have just put these new water bottle pockets on the previous version of the bag, 5 stars. Maybe we'll see a 3.0, MR?....

Great Vacation Daypack

I bought this bag to take on a Mediterranean cruise. I stowed it in my carry-on and used it wandering around Rome before the cruise and at every port. It was early spring and the little pack could hold both mine and my wife's light jackets, 1 or 2 water battles in the side pockets, a camera, notebook, wipes and power pack with cables to recharge our phones. It also carried a small tripod that I either slipped into a side pocket and secured it at the top with the elastic cord, or used the external loop at the bottom of the back and the top elastic cord. I like the layout of the bag. The 2 side pockets are very roomy can can hold a 32 bottle or can be cinched around a smaller bottle to keep it secure and stable. The outside pocket allowed quick access to my notebook, powerpack and charging cables. I used internal hydro pocket to store items like the wipes I knew I might need but didn't want to dig under jackets etc. It carried everything nicely, and felt much better on my shoulders than a sling. On the trip we purchase enough evil-eyes, scarves, etc to use the bag as a carry-on for more space. The lightweight material did hold up well to 2 weeks of me accidently rubbing it on concrete, bumping poles and the occasional rock. To help secure the bag I purchased a set of MicroLock S-biners and one #4 S-biner, The small S-biners were used to link zippers to deter curious hands. The #4 S-biner clipped the top of my water bottle to the convenient loop above the side pockets. The bag was the best purchase I made for the trip.

Remodeling done right

Much more streamlined than previous generation. Gone are bunch of daisy chains and compression straps. This year’s model is super light weight and stress free to store into its own pocket. Has just enough functions to be useful for summit attack to quick grocery shop. I keep one of these in my big travel luggage just in case. White version is very cool though not sure how long they stay white? This is a must buy.

Compact and effecient

Bought this as a PT bag and it totally works. A little tight with running shoes and the works, but light, effective, and super storable. Very satisfied, would recommend.
