Why We Like The Mammut Alugator Ultra Shovel

With an impressively low gram count, the Mammut Alugator Ultra Shovel makes the carry light work while still crushing the heavy work. With an ultra-thin blade and telescoping handle, this shovel slips discreetly into our pack. Before we climb the skintrack, we utilize the blade's straight back to test the snowpack. In the event of an emergency, the sharp, tilt-resistant front edge and integrated steps drive into hardpack, and the T-grip transfers every ounce of energy we put in for optimal efficiency.

Great Ultralight Shovel

Great spring time shovel. Very light. Small compact blade. I choose to use a larger one in the winter.

Light but X-small

Was excited when I read the specs on this shovel, but I was pretty surprised by how small it is after unboxing it. Smaller capacity than the tiny Black Diamond Deploy 3 that I carry for inbounds skiing. Better than not carrying a shovel at all but it would take a long time to move much snow with such a small blade. No magic formula - 20% lighter, because it’s 20% smaller. Marketed as the lightest shovel available, but likely the smallest shovel in the market as well.

This shovel may be small in size, but it is impressively lightweight, making it easy to handle and maneuver. Despite its compact design, it performs just as effectively as a larger shovel when it comes to digging. I have personally used it to dig several test pits, and it has proven to be just as capable and efficient as a full-sized shovel. Additionally, its size does not compromise its functionality—it's still large enough to move substantial amounts of snow quickly and efficiently, making it a reliable tool for winter tasks.

digger

Used this on an avy course digging snow pits. It moved a lot of snow easily, and fit my hands comfortably

Light and great size for my use

The other review mentioning the shovel is “small” is somewhat accurate, but not a negative depending on what you are using the shovel for or your situation and type of snow. Hopefully my photo shows scale and comparison to mammut’s other shovel. This thing is super light, high quality, and feels sturdy. I like this ultralight setup for easy day tours or resort skiing - building jumps or minor avy rescue (small slides). But it’s important to know your environment, if you have super heavy snow like the PNW and risk or larger slab avalanches or deep burials, it’s likely better to go with a shovel with more surface area. I’m not ski patrol, but it is something touched on in avy training (also important in considering probe length). I’ve had a few shovels, both Mammut, G3, and black diamond. Black diamond is cheap and low quality like most their gear, G3 was heavy but burly, and I feel like Mammut really shines in high quality low weight products I feel confident in for avalanche rescue or general use.
