Black Diamond Spinner Leash – Smart, Safe, and Built for Big Ice
As a guide, I rely on gear that’s designed with real-world safety in mind. The Black Diamond Spinner Leash is the best tool tether I’ve found for serious ice climbing—especially on long multi-pitch routes at high altitude where losing a tool could be a critical problem. Its breakaway design protects you during a fall by releasing if your tool is fixed in the ice—unlike cords or slings, which can cause injury. The swivel system prevents leash tangling, and the locking carabiners add extra security compared to other brands like Petzl. Lightweight, reliable, and thoughtfully built, it’s the system I trust when it counts the most.

Perfect as described
They work swimmingly - they're just long enough to not restrict your movement when reaching for a high tool placement, and short enough to not constantly get caught around everything. The freely rotating connection point means that the tools don't get caught up around each other, you can just switch hands without issue. I've been feeling much more secure since using the leashes, it's a comfort to know that I won't lose a tool if something goes wrong

Great
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Great piece of gear. Leashes aren’t for everybody, but if you need a doubl leash, make sure you get one like this that spins. My one concern is that I don’t know it’s beak strength. I hope it’s low enough to not get pulled down by an ice fall, I do trust BD but I find it strange that it’s not rated.

Biner bent on second climb
I will likely try these again but I bought a set at Michigan Ice Fest last season. One of the biners bent so the gate doesn't close on the second climb on the first day using them. First time I have ever been disappointed with a Black Diamond product in 20+ years.

Another great bit of BD gear!
Light, small, well made, “just works.” I get the “leashless” idea I just can’t imagine risking dropping a tool.

They Spin
Nice light weight leashes. Locking 'biners help these stand out from the competition. The elastic is low resistance--almost unnoticeable. The black color contrasts well with most ropes, making it easy to avoid messy tangles when following.

Solid option
If you need a leash this is a good option. Screwgate biners securely attach to your tools. I am not a big fan of climbing with tethers but in certain situations dropping and axe is day ending event or worse. In those situations this leash from BD is a solid option.

Do their job. Would be
Do their job. Would be nice to have these offered in full strength so they could be used in anchor building.
