Mission Down 4000M Parka brings expedition-level warmth and durability to alpine extremes
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"When I need maximum warmth for alpine basecamps or frigid bivies, this is the parka I trust. The 800-fill down is super lofty, and the Liquid Crystal Polymer shell holds up to sharp rock and crampons. It’s like wearing a portable sleeping bag with pockets."
When our route takes us into bitter winds and sub-zero terrain, we rely on the Black Diamond Mission Down 4000M Parka to keep us warm and focused. Designed for high-altitude expeditions and extreme alpine conditions, this parka delivers full-on, sleeping-bag-level insulation in a durable, streamlined package built to withstand serious mountain abuse.
Packed with high-loft 800-fill goose down, the Mission Down 4000M features a Liquid Crystal Polymer-reinforced nylon shell—one of the most durable ultralight fabrics available—finished with a PFAS-free DWR for added weather resistance. The articulated design gives us range of motion when roped up or racking gear, and the helmet-compatible hood and two-way front zipper make this a true belay-ready piece. Oversized hand, chest, and internal drop pockets stash water bottles, gloves, and essentials where we can grab them, even in gloves. For alpine missions that demand the most from our gear, this is the parka we trust to go the distance.

Like sitting next to the wood stove in the cabin.
I love this jacket. I am normally a Rab/dead bird guy for insulation. But this is my favorite puffy for truly cold conditions. It is comfortable beyond belief. It fits well. Has great coverage and mobility. It’s light for its warmth. 10/10. A total classic mega puff (it is mega).

The "Holy Grail" of Belay Parkas
I have been on a manhunt for the perfect belay parka for mountaineering and have landed on this one. So much to say: First, the fit in incredible. It has a generous and roomy fit with long arms, hem, and big enough hood - even after putting it over EVERY other layer! All other belay parkas I've used (OR Super Alpine & Patagonia Fitz Roy) always end up tightening up (even after sizing up) which frustrates me - how are they not aware of thus issue? But the BD, no, with all layers on including a helmet, when you put the hood up, it fits perfectly, you maintain mobility to look around without the hoody pulling up, when you reach out your arms, the sleeves don't come up, and the long-enough hem keeps your booty warm! Aside from fit, I LOVE the pockets - two hand and two chest plus internal pockets which are GREAT because in these cold environments, you're always slipping off gloves, beanies, eyewear, snacks, etc. and these pockets accommodate them perfectly. Additionally, I APPRECIATE the two-way zipper; This is CRUCIAL when wearing a harness so the rope doesn't pull up the jacket. Very few other belay parkas have this feature and I'm super glad it has it, thank you. Now. . . I bought this at the onset of summer so have not been able to actually test this in cold conditions so note that. However, studying the build, the feel, and knowing other belay parkas, I'm beyond confident that this will out-perform, out-class, and out-compete all other belay parkas. . . Thank you BD for an incredible product (and for offering it in the tundra color), and I am grateful for this jacket, thank you!!!

This will completely change the way I approach the cold. Can't wait to test its limits.
