Why We Like The Black Diamond Mission 75L Backpack

Black Diamond designed the top-loading Mission 75 Backpack to be a lightweight expedition-sized hauler for alpine assaults and extended backcountry trips, so hauling those massive loads at altitude won't be such a painful experience. The Mission's ReActiv hip belt uses a floating design to allow your waist to move naturally, and distributes weight efficiently once the hip belt is tightened down. SwingArm shoulder straps work with the thermoformed back panel to provide the ideal combination of flexibility and support, allowing you to cover more ground with less stress, which might seem wimpy but is essential when you're out for a long time and little rubs and hot spots start to add up and make you miserable.

A low-fat, streamlined design keeps the Mission light but, as you'd expect from Black Diamond, it has vertical DNA, so it doesn't skimp on the necessary features. It comes replete with a PickPocket ice tool carrying system, crampon pouch, and three-point haul system, so you can take your gear with you when steep trekking gets vertical during the final push. The Mission is hydration-compatible, too, so you don't end up desiccated like the arid regions you're moving through, and the padded hip-belt is removable to save weight and reduce bulk. You can also remove the top of the pack and stow your rope in the tuck-away strap if you're looking to shave off ounces but keep your essential gear close by.

I've used the pack with

I've used the pack with loads of about 25#s and 50#s and found it comfortable either way (relatively - I don't think anything over 50#s is ever going to be that comfortable). My torso measures exactly 19" and I tried and returned the S/M before landing on the L/XL. I do feel like it's a bit big for me, but the S/M was way too small. Being a little in between sizes makes the fit imperfect, but I'll put up with it. For the price point I'm still very happy.

Mission 75 Bag

This bag is great, super lightweight, modular and fits a ton of stuff. Gear dogbone is great and crampon pocket is versatile.

Everything you need nothing you don’t

No qualms with this bag. Have the 50L and bought this one so I can stay out a couple more days.

Bomber Pack

Just took the pack out in its debut trip up to Nipigon Ontario to climb some ice. Pack was stellar. Padding is perfect on the hips, suspension felt great. Had plenty of storage for all my gear and then some. Tools stayed secure and crampons didn't leave a dent in the material. Very happy with this purchase.

Great Backcountry Backpack

Used this pack for some longer days at the crag, as well as a couple night camping in the backcountry. Comfortable and exactly what I needed.

Mission 75 Pack

Great price point. Used this the day after getting it to Hike Mt Si in North Bend, WA with 38 lbs in it. It felt great; sturdy and comfortable. Only drawback thus far is no side pockets for Nalgen Bottles.

Overall pretty good

Overall, the mission 75 is a wicked ski mountaineering/traverse bag. There are some small but significant issues with the bag. Chest Straps: Plastic tabs that come off. On one hand, it makes them replaceable -- which is good things are going to break. On the other hand, they fall off quite often. It's a minor issue until you're navigating a whiteout waiting for a quick vis window fumbling with a fallen off chest clip at a summit col in -25 with strong winds. I feel like a more robust system could be used for this. Ice axe straps: These are velcro'd in. THey also fall off -- especially when you get snow on the velcro, which is going to happen at elevation in wind. I'm not sure why these aren't sewn into the bag

Next gen big objective pack

Finally, found what I was looking for. A big objective alpine pack that can be paired down for summit push. It just arrived and the quality looks top-notch. I am looking forward to seeing how this pack performs in the Arctic for 28 days at high altitude. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep up with the Mission:)
