First Light Hybrid Hooded Jacket adapts to alpine starts and fast-paced missions

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"I rely on the First Light Hybrid Hooded Jacket for cold-weather pursuits that don’t stop moving. Whether I’m skinning pre-dawn or navigating techy alpine terrain, the mapped insulation and breathable wool panels keep me just right without overheating."

When we're moving in the mountains, we need a layer that can keep up with shifting temps and unpredictable output. The First Light Hybrid Hooded Jacket from Black Diamond nails that balance with mapped insulation and breathable merino paneling in a stretchy, low-bulk build that thrives under a pack or harness.

This hybrid midlayer is built for dynamic pursuits—trail runs at altitude, dawn patrol skin tracks, or final pitches to alpine summits. The PrimaLoft® Gold Active insulation keeps warmth where we need it, while merino-wool-backed sleeves and underarms shed heat and wick moisture when we’re working hard. A slim fit, helmet-compatible hood, and packable design make this piece essential for anyone whose plans start and end in the cold and dark.

Looking Forward to Fall/Winter Weather

I just received my First Light Hoody and it fits true to size. Now I’m waiting for the weather to cool down to use it…. it’s 95F outside!

My favorite mid layer

I purchased three for myself, and more for my kids. My favorite mid layer by far for high output activities. Worth to weight ratio is solid. Minimize sweating because of the heat mapping.

Nice piece of gear.

Like it so far, seems like a solid fit for several different types of approach/conditions. I’m actually excited for the weather to dip down, as it’s summer now, although I plan on using it in the Dolomites and Italian Alps toward the end of summer.

Third time purchasing this jacket

Didn’t think it would get any better than the last version of this jacket. Love the new cut and features of the latest model.

Maybe the perfect shoulder season coat.

I've been loving the First Light Hybrid Hoody. Comfortable and great weight for fall/spring outdoor activities. I wear it everyday in town and on the trails. Might have to buy a second one.

The most comfortable jacket I’ve ever worn!!! But….

This is by far the most comfortable jacket I’ve ever worn and can’t recommend it enough to anyone who gets after it in the mountains. But the 20d nylon material that covers the primaloft insulation is extremely delicate and gets little fibers coming off anywhere it rubs on literally anything. My face stubble tears the fibers it’s way to delicate. I wish it was just a bit more abrasion resistant because it is amazingly comfortable. You can wear it in 50 degree f weather all the way down into the low 20’s and still be comfortable. It’s amazing at keeping you at the right temperature. Just is beyond delicate… my bread stubble shouldn’t tear up the nylon face fabric that is just ridiculous for outdoor gear. Seriously you will have to be so careful with it, and for the price it shouldn’t be that delicate.

Very good, but not perfect

I love the weight to warmth ratio of this coat, which is great. It keeps my core and arms warm during high-output activities, without overheating for the most part. Between the thin wool panels and adjusting the zip, I’ve been able to dial in heat management while active. I also really like the chest pocket, reflective zips, and pack-in-pocket features. The only two downsides are that the hood is oversized for a helmet (not usually an issue, but without any adjustments, it makes it far too large and cumbersome for everyday, non-helmet wear), and I noticed a small amount of premature wear on the smooth material after my first backcountry ski tour wearing it. As skinning was one of its advertised activities, I was surprised to find that the material was already worn from the backpack on my first long outing wearing it. I’ll continue to wear and enjoy the jacket, but it’s not as durable as I expected.

Great light weight warmth

I live in northern Michigan and love the warmth this super lightweight jacket provides. Another great product by Black Diamond.

Gamble paid off

Price is high, I didn’t even get a color I normally would wear (flax), but after using on some ski tours I can happily say that the reviews are true. Quite possibly one best insulating, athletic fit and pack wearing friendly garments one could wear for high output activity. I’m happy with this purchase

Designed very well, but delicate

The insulation is mapped extremely well — the best that I have seen . Even heating for high output activities. Only negative is that the fabric is super cozy which also means that itisdelicate. If you do not gingerly handle the article, it will look pretty rough after a couple washes or wears as an outer layer.
