Lightweight, stormproof GORE-TEX shell built for backcountry versatility

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

“The GORE-TEX Core Shell is exactly what you want in a storm shell—nothing extra, just serious protection that keeps you dry and comfortable no matter how deep it gets. I’ve worn it on everything from lift-access powder days to long backcountry missions, and it’s always kept up. The chest vents are clutch when you’re skinning or hiking, and the fit layers perfectly over midweight insulation.”

When the storm moves in, we grab the 686 GORE-TEX Core Shell Jacket for guaranteed protection that never slows us down. Designed with the minimalist backcountry rider in mind, this lightweight shell delivers full GORE-TEX waterproofing, storm-ready durability, and the kind of technical detail that makes long days in the mountains run smoother. Whether we're skinning for powder turns or charging resort laps in heavy snow, this jacket keeps us warm, dry, and fully focused on the ride.

The 2-layer GORE-TEX construction blocks out moisture while maintaining outstanding breathability for comfort on high-output tours and stormy lift rides alike. Fully taped seams and a PFC-free DWR add even more reliable waterproofing, while chest vents and mesh-lined pockets help regulate airflow on demanding climbs. Details like a helmet-compatible hood, adjustable cuffs, and a pant-to-jacket integration system lock out wind and snow, while an array of internal and external pockets organize everything from goggles to lip balm. It’s a true do-it-all shell—built to handle deep days, big lines, and any weather the mountains throw our way.

No pit vents

Purchased the jacket expecting it to have pit vents, its standard for any jacket I've ever own. Based off the description, I thought it the chest vent was in addition to the pit vents, sadly that's not the case. Bought this jacket for the gore-tex and uphill skiing and my main concern is that the single chest vent isnt adequate. Lastly the fabric seems very thin, but time will tell if its durable enough. With all 686 products, the construction is quality with tight stitching, not to complain about here. Fit wise, I'm generally an XL but this jacket is huge on me. I could size down and still have plenty of room to layer. The cuffs are also very wide, allowing users if big gloves to tuck into the sleeves.

Best Bibs I've Used Yet

These bibs were fantastic for my snowboarding trip in Breckenridge. These bibs were extra flexible and didn't make me feel as constrained as other bibs have. They fit well and were very comfortable for riding from first chair to last. We ended up having a pretty wide range of temperatures from 40 to -10. The vents did a great job of keeping me cool on the warmer days, and I only had to add a single layer of thermal underwear (top and bottom) to be comfortable on the -10 days!

No ventilation…bummer

Shouldn’t make a Shell without armpit vents. Shells are meant for warmer conditions and to layer under, armpit vents are a must!!! Got to be able to let the heat out after a hard resort lap or skinning to get a sweet line. Add Armpit Vents to all snow jackets!!!!

So far, so good! Living

So far, so good! Living right outside the Middlesex Fells, the weather can be incredibly variable year round, and this jacket handles the rain and wind well. I've found this jacket has managed to keep me warm when it's cold out, but also not overheat me in the event the sun is out because of how light the jacket is. The vents also help a lot with that, too. Definitely recommend!

Solid basic gore tex jacket

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love the fit. I got a medium, I’m 5’7 170lbs and it fits perfect, not too big not too small. Colors/style are on point. Clearly high quality materials from 686. Only disappointment is the lack of pockets on this jacket… every other 686 jacket has tons of random pockets that I put to use. This has a very very basic design

The jacket is super lightweight

The jacket is super lightweight which allows for comfortable wearing and has plenty of room to layer up in. It’s not bulky or in proportional, all of the measurements are equal and allow for comfortable wearing with and without layers underneath.

Thumbs Up

This is an awesome shell. It is true to size. All of my jackets are L but with this one a M is perfect.

Things that make you go hmm…

Awesome style, and you know 686 is made to last. It would be better if it had a two-way zipper and the venting is different with the no underarm vents and only the chest vent. I’m sure the front vent will be fine but I would consider underarm venting pretty much a standard feature of any jacket these days.
